Visiting Chimayo just north of Santa Fe is like stepping back in time. It receives many visitors to its church of El Santuario de Chimayo which has been called the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in the United States.! A short walk takes you to another pilgrimage site, the children’s chapel of Santo Niño de Atocha.
All of the surrounding stores and cafes are decorated with religious themes. My first visit was a few years back when I had the best chicharones ever at Leona’s Restaurante within the grounds of the church and have been dreaming about it since. Sigh, they no longer make them but had a great tamales and bowl of corn instead.
